Mr. Carney said Canada will respond "dollar for dollar" to U.S. tariffs starting Sept. 8 to protect its workers, farmers, families and businesses. However, the details of the retaliatory tariffs have not yet been announced. According to Mr. Carney, Canada was ready to remove its remaining retaliatory tariffs on strategic sectors such as steel, aluminum and automobiles, provided the U.S. reduced its tariffs substantially. Canada will not accept any restrictions on its ability to freely negotiate trade deals with other countries. US Trade Representative Jamieson Grier said Canada refused to finalize a trade deal with Washington. He confirmed that the new tariffs have come into effect from August 22. The failure of the talks has re-ignited trade tensions between the two North American neighbors and both governments are preparing to impose more retaliatory tariffs.
