Brazil's prominent left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has secured victory once again after a tough electoral contest. He defeated his right-wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro, who has not yet conceded defeat. According to a BBC report, Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court stated that after the counting of all votes was completed, Lula received 51.79 percent of the votes, while Bolsonaro obtained 48.21 percent.
However, Bolsonaro has refused to accept the election results. He termed the 2-hour extension of voting time unclear, even though the reality is that both his own campaign team and his rival's team had demanded that polling stations be kept open longer. He told his supporters in Brasilia that they would demand the annulment of the election.
Despite this, Lula and his supporters are celebrating this victory. They are calling it a historic success and a remarkable turnaround.
This is Lula's fourth victory in presidential elections. He served two terms as president from January 2003 to December 2010 and has held the position again since January 2023. However, his path to victory in Sunday's second-round runoff was not easy.
In the first round on October 4, Bolsonaro had defeated Lula, and many people did not expect that he would manage to overturn the election results in just 3 weeks.
Lula has also challenged the broader trend continuing in Latin America, under which voters rejected incumbent leaders and turned toward right-wing ideologies. Across this entire region, conservative leaders are now in power in major countries like Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.
Lula, a former metalworker who has been the most prominent face of Brazilian left-wing politics since first running for president in 1989, faces the toughest political circumstances since first taking power in 2003.
His new term starting on January 5, 2027, will begin at a time when he will face major challenges on both domestic and international fronts. These include opposition from US President Donald Trump.
