The Gandak River catchment area in Nepal has seen an increase in the flow of river water in the last 24 hours due to heavy rainfall. At 11 am on Sunday, the flow of sulfur water at Valmiki Nagar barrage was recorded at 4.24 lakh cusecs. The trend of water flow is continuously increasing.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Mr. Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said in a press conference held at the meeting hall of the Water Resources Department on Sunday that based on the water level recorded at the Devghat gauge site, about 80 km from the Valmikinagar barrage and Parinepal, around 5 lakh cusecs or more is expected at the barrage by evening. However, this is expected to be less than the maximum inflow of 5.62 lakh cusecs recorded in 2024. He said that all regional officers and engineers associated with Gandak river have been instructed to be on 24-hour alert mode in view of increased water flow. Additional engineers have been deployed on both the banks of the Sulfur to strengthen the monitoring and maintenance of the embankments.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the engineers have been instructed to be vigilant and keep a close eye on the condition of the embankments. He clarified that any lapse in monitoring will be taken seriously and strict action will be taken.
Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Mr Chaudhary said that the water level of Ganga river is currently low. As a result smooth flow of water from Gandak to Ganga is achievable. It looks at the possibility of widespread water accumulation or reducing the risk of severe flooding. However, the department also clarified that it is not possible to predict the natural conditions 100%. Stating that the current situation is under control, the officers have been instructed to keep a constant vigil. He appealed to the public not to panic but to be alert and alert. The management and water resources department teams are continuously monitoring the situation.
