Patna, February 14 (ABN): Transport Minister Shroan Kumar said that a total of 4,117 fancy number plates were issued during the past two months (from December 1, 2025, to February 13, 2026), generating approximately Rs 6 crore in revenue for the state government.
Minister Shroan Kumar stated that the highest number of fancy numbers were registered in Patna district, where 1,597 number plates were issued, generating Rs 2.46 crore in revenue from Patna alone. This was followed by Muzaffarpur with 358, Gaya with 321, Purnia with 189, and Rohtas with 174 fancy number plates issued, with the respective districts generating Rs 52.17 lakh, Rs 41.10 lakh, Rs 33.53 lakh, and Rs 20.90 lakh.
He said that during the past two months, there has been a significant decrease in the pendency related to vehicle registration at DTO offices, resulting in an increase in the number of people availing registration and other transport facilities. He stated that the transparency in the transport department's work is also making it easier for people to fulfill their desires.
The minister further stated that there are clear rules in place for obtaining fancy number plates in the state. Under Rule 64 of the Bihar Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Rules, 1992, the allocation of fancy numbers is being done through e-auction to ensure transparent distribution. Separate basic fees have been fixed for non-transport (private) and transport vehicles. The number plates have been divided into five groups (A, B, C, D, E), where premium numbers like 0001, 0003, 0005, 0007, 0009 in Group A are available for a fee of Rs 1 lakh for non-transport vehicles and Rs 35,000 for transport vehicles. Additionally, popular numbers like 1100, 1212, 2525, 9999, etc., are also available for a higher fee.
He stated that if two applications are received for the same number, an e-auction is held, for which the applicants have to pay a non-refundable registration fee of Rs 1,000 to participate. The fancy number is issued to the highest bidder, who has to pay the full amount within seven days, failing which the number is canceled and the next applicant is given a chance. If a number is not sold in the auction, it can be put up for auction again.
