Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis strongly condemned the attempted murder of Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff on Tuesday, stating that the Mumbai Police has treated the shooting incident with utmost seriousness and has identified the individuals involved. Fadnavis said that no gang or individual involved in the shooting at the Bollywood actor would be spared. On Sunday, unidentified armed men opened fire on Shroff’s car. The actor escaped unharmed, though he sustained minor scratches from glass shards and the impact of the bullets. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the attack. This gang, which evolved from a group active in Punjab and northern India, has transformed into an international organized crime network.
The opposition has harshly criticized the state government led by the BJP over the incident, alleging that the shooting at the Bollywood actor reflects the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. This is not the first time the Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for targeting prominent politicians, singers, and other personalities. The gang is linked to several incidents in Mumbai, including the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Sadique. Additionally, the gang’s name has surfaced in incidents in Punjab and abroad.
Baba Sadique was shot dead in October 2024 in Bandra, outside the office of his son, Zishan Sadique. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the murder, asserting that Baba Sadique had close ties with Bollywood actor Salman Khan. Earlier that year, two attackers on a motorcycle had fired four shots outside Salman Khan’s residence in Bandra. The gang had openly stated that Sadique was targeted due to his friendship with Salman Khan and his alleged underworld connections.
The same gang’s name also surfaced in the murder of renowned Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala in May 2022. The singer and politician Sidhu Moose Wala was ambushed and shot dead in the Punjab village of Jawaharkay while driving his car. Canada-based gang operative Goldy Brar, along with Lawrence Bishnoi, had claimed responsibility for the murder. They alleged that the killing was revenge for the 2021 murder of young Akali leader Vicky Midhokhira. According to them, Sidhu Moose Wala had provided shelter to Midhokhira’s killers.
In December 2023, Sukhdev Singh Gogamari, president of the right-wing organization Rashtriya Rajput Karyakari Sena, was shot dead inside his home. The attackers had entered the house under the pretext of a meeting. Rohit Godara, a close associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, attributed the murder to personal enmities and Gogamari’s alleged interference in the gang’s regional interests.
In September 2023, wanted gangster Sukhdul Singh Gill, also known as "Sukha Donike," who had fled Punjab for Canada, was shot dead in the Canadian city of Winnipeg. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the murder, alleging that Donike was aiding rival gangs in Punjab and Canada, specifically the Bombiya gang.
